Jack Purvis Cemetery

During the construction of Bagnell Dam and creation of Lake of the Ozarks, Union Electric made an attempt to remove buried remains if they would fall below the projected shoreline of the lake. The official count listed 60 cemeteries, encompassing approximately 2,800 grave sites. If an old burial site was marked with a tombstone, it was moved with the remains. If there were no tombstone, which was the case for many sites, the new grave site was assigned a number, and a metal plate bearing that number was placed over the grave. Written records commissioned by the company listed hundreds of grave sites with nothing but a simple notation: “unmarked.” Researchers and “old timers” have said the relocation of grave sites were “a big mess” and “piecemeal”. It is quite certain there were graves that were never moved.Jack Purvis Cemetery is located just off the shoreline on the east side of the mouth of Staley Cove near mile marker 41.
