Politician. A Liberal Democrat politician, he represented Hazel Grove as a Member of Parliament from 1997 until 2015. During his political career, he held various roles, including Shadow Energy Minister and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government. Stunell played a key role in the UK's first coalition government since World War II, contributing to negotiations between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. In recognition of his contributions to public and political service, he was knighted in the 2013 Birthday Honours. Stunell's early life and career began in Sutton, Surrey, where he attended Surbiton County Grammar School for Boys. He studied architecture at the University of Manchester and Liverpool Polytechnic, becoming a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1969. After working as an architectural assistant and freelance architect, Stunell transitioned to a political career, serving as Political Secretary of the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors and earning an OBE in 1995 for his work. In addition to his political achievements, Stunell was known for his commitment to community cohesion, race equality, and housing and regeneration. He was active in his local Methodist church and was a former Baptist lay preacher. Stunell passed away on 29 April 2024 at the age of 81.
