Watson Cemetery
Cass County, North Dakota, USA
Excerpts of minutes from 1883 to 1912:
I. "On motion it was resolved to fence the graveyard one acre with four galvanized barb wires, post of oak placed every 16 ft. apart and a double gate of 7 ft. wide of pickets." "Also resolved that all those person giving their signature and paying one dollar before the 20th day April, 1883, are entitled to a lot in said graveyard. After the 21st day of May parties requiring lots will pay $3.00 each and one dollar for a single grave."
II. "Put 10 hitching posts down, some to be of cedar or tamarack."
III. "Agreed to purchase 18 ft. of leather straps to be used at burial instead of ropes."
IV. "The meeting was intended to be held on the cemetery ground but a severe wind and dust storm drove us down in the hollow on Sec. III. Also we agree to purchase an acre of ground from Mrs. Olson." John Olson had been paid for a little acreage earlier.
Besides the names previously mentioned, name of interested workers include Pete Walburg, Bernard Bracht, J. H. Wills, Andrew Watt, William Young, Charles Zick, Charles Ufer, August Otto, Richard Martin, John Olson, Paul Kruse, Otto Zaeske, Harry Barron, and John Watt.
The plan to have annual meetings at the cemetery on Memorial Day began in 1912 and still continued as of 1976. A. Jackson was clerk of the organization for many years.
The "Watson Cemetery Association" was incorporated on May 22, 1950 with the North Dakota Secretary of State's Office. At that time August Zaeske was named president of the board of trustees, a position he held until 1975. John C. Jackson and Andrew Watt, Sr., were the other trustees named at the time of incorporation.
In 1951, the immediate heirs of Mr. and Mrs. William Watt of Leonard, asked to buy land north and west of the existing cemetery and to do extensive landscaping of this area and the cemetery itself. This to be done in memory of their parents. Permission was granted and the result was rewarding.
Other gifts have been received: a parking area given by the John H. Jacksons, 1½ acres of land to the east of the present cemetery, a gift from Edward Erbstoesser, the Elmer Gruels and the August Zaeskes. Too, many monetary gifts have been received.
In 1966, a five-person board was set up to act as trustees for the many trust funds thoughtfully given. In recent years, peaches have been sold by the cemetery association to fundraise for general maintenance of the cemetery.
