The cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro is located on the grounds of the Greensboro Historical Museum. Known as the Old Presbyterian Graveyard, this cemetery is a historian's delight. Arborists will find the cemetery of interest given the wide variety of trees planted here in recent years. Burials in the cemetery range from 1831- 1926. Among the Greensborians buried in this cemetery are Governor John Motley Morehead, (short story writer) O.Henry's parents, and veterans of the Revolutionary, 1812, and Civil Wars.

Photo by Joel Gillespie used with permission "I stumbled across the cemetery behind the Greensboro Historical Museum several years ago when it was in much disrepair. It was and remains my favorite place in downtown Greensboro. There are some very interesting old trees in the cemetery including, as if meant to make this SC boy happy, a long leaf pine, a short leaf pine, an American holly, an even two palmetto trees!As many know the building that was first used by First Presbyterian Church in the early 1800's was later used as a hospital for confederate wounded. There are many stories in the air in that special place.It has recently been upgraded or repaired, including the planting of many beautiful flowers and ground covers. It is a lovely place, a "secret garden" complete with brick wall."

The Old Presbyterian Church Cemetery is now owned and located at the Greensboro Historical Society, 130 Summit Ave., Greensboro, Guilford, NC 27401 (Corner of Summit and Lindsay). The Museum is open Tues-Sat, 10-5pm and Sun 2-5pm. Closed Monday. Phone: 336-373-2043. Photo taken 22 Nov 2013 by Rich Ware.

Jesse Harper Lindsay donated land for a church building and cemetery in 1831. The deed was finalized in 1832. At least one grave may date to 1831; currently, 1834 is the oldest burial date readable on any marker. The last burial occurred in 1926. The cemetery, through the years, has been referred to as Presbyterian Burial Grounds, Presbyterian Churchyard, First Presbyterian Churchyard, Old Presbyterian Graveyard. The cemetery has been a victim of a series of episodes of neglect followed by aggressive repairs. The cemetery has been on the National Register of Historic Places, but it's status is now unknown.
