Cemetery restoration 2011

Old County Cemetery renamed Chanate Historic Cemetery. This cemetery is currently being restored.

Highway 101 north. Exit to right at Bicentennial. Right on Mendocino. Left at Chanate at stop light. Next light turn left to continue on Chanate. Turn right at Hospital Drive and take very next right into parking area. Follow to right past "Administration deliveries - 3322 Chanate Road". Cemetery sign is on the right.
The old cemetery is located on county property behind the Sutter family care center. It was used for indigent burials, as well as those Chinese who were refused burial at private cemeteries. The cemetery was used between 1876 and 1944 but was then abandoned. Over 1500 burials.

The cemetery was overgrown and unaccessable for years. Currently, community involvement has provided clean up, identifying graves,and a memorial project is currently in the works.
