The land goes back to Maj. William Skinner, whose service in the American Revolution was honored with a land grant in Georgia in what is now Screven County. He then swapped that land with his father-in-law in 1806 for 4,129 acres here in the Augusta area -that included where the family cemetery was created. The name of this general area was called "Skinnerville" at that time.
