09 OCT 2008: Success! With the help of Lamar Everage we were able to relocate this cemetery and photograph all markers found there. In 18 years since we were last there, it has changed a LOT. The same few markers we found were still there and someone has had a newer "genealogy" marker placed for one Jeremiah Dixon--no one knows who placed it or when?? I would be interested not only in that information, but also the documentation that shows he was buried in Teel cemetery. If he truly was buried here in 1835, then this cemetery is the oldest known in the county, surpassing Red Level by nearly 20 years! Further indicating the possibility that numerous other of Covington's original settlers might be buried here, my own Wilson Franklin (d.1830s) could even be among them! Access the cemetery using the dirt road past Conecuh River Baptist Church at these coordinates: N31 12.082 W086 37.907, then turn down the dirt road at coordinates: N31 12.503 W086 38.390
Full resolution photos of all markers are available for download at trackingyourroots.com on the Covington County page for Teel Cemetery.
