Canoe Cove is located 10 miles south-west of Charlottetown in Lot 65, on the south side of the Island adjacent to Northumberland Strait. The name was likely derived from the French 'Anse Canot'. The Indians called the place 'Kweduna Wolna' or Canoe Cove in their language.
A McDonaldite Church was built in Canoe Cove in 1872. It was originally to be built near the Shaw Cemetery (St. Catherine's). All the lumber was floated by water from the Shaw site to Canoe Cove. Unfortunately, there are few, if any, records remaining re: the church and/or the cemetery.
Each stone number has a letter preceding it to indicate which Section of the Cemetery it lies within; A being the oldest and original section, B, the intermediate and C the newer area. The first survey of the Cemetery took no account of the boundary between sections B and C and, because of the numbered cards in the Master Name Index of the PEI Genealogical Society, we wish to preserve the existing numbering system.
