Charity United Methodist Church is located at 4080 Charity Neck Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia (23457) at the intersection of Charity Neck Road and Gum Bridge Road in the rural, southern Pungo section of Virginia Beach. Until 1963, when the city of Virginia Beach was created, the church was in the now extinct county of Princess Anne and all of the old county records can be found at the present-day Virginia Beach Courthouse.

Charity UMC was the first Methodist congregation to be formed in Princess Anne County. It's date of organization is 1789 and it was initially known as "Dawley Meetinghouse". The name was soon changed to "Charity" and the first church building was erected at the present day location. Fire claimed the third church building on that site in February 1941. The present day structure is the fourth in the history of the Charity UMC congregation. This congregation is still a vital and growing congregation as evidenced by the building's continued expansion. There are three different cornerstones on different parts of today's church building; 1958, 1984 and 2005, that mark the years when new sections were added.

This photo, taken from near the back of the cemetery and facing southeast, shows the expanse of the cemetery. Gum Bridge Road is on the right side of the photo, with Charity Neck Road running from the left side of the photo to where they intersect on the other side of the visible church building.

This portion of the church cemetery is located to the north side of the main church building. Many of the graves in this section are some of the oldest in the cemetery. The photo was taken standing near the edge of Charity Neck Road facing southwest.

This small graveyard is situated directly across Charity Neck Road from the front of the church building. Directly behind the graveyard is the church parking lot and to the south is the Church Parsonage. Most of the graves here date to the late 1800s.

This photo, from 1901, shows the third church building on the present-day site. It was destroyed by fire in February of 1941.The church was part of the Princess Anne Circuit from 1813 until well into the 1900s, when the church finally received its first full-time minister in 1947.(source for photo: "Princess Anne County and Virignia Beach; A Pictorial History", by Stephen S.
