Prior to the mid 1990's, the cemetery was abandoned and overgrown; the walls were fallen and mature trees had overtaken grave area. Many local residents were not even aware of its existence. A native Timberville resident who, as a young boy, remembered the old-timers talking about the Stoner cemetery and pondered its location. After many inquiries, the almost vanished little graveyard was discovered. The restoration and preservation of the Stoner cemetery became the personal passion of this individual. He is a descendent of Rebecca Stoner Garber, whose brother Samuel Stoner is interred there. With the blessings of the property owner, this individual single-handedly removed the trees, cleared the brush, repaired and reset the stones, and rebuilt the walls. Regular mowing and upkeep of the cemetery also fall under his care. His life-long interest in local history and family genealogy fuels his concern not only for the preservation of the Stoner cemetery, but the memory of those interred there.
For the work he's done, a simple thank-you seems insufficient, but it's all we have. On behalf of those with ties to the Stoner cemetery -- Thanks,Cousin!
