Bass Chapel founded 1867 as Lake Academy by Wm. C. Bass, D.D. Rebuilt 1879 and named Bass Chapel to honor Dr. Bass, who preached at this church once a month until his death 1894, minister for 42 yrs. He served as professor for 15 yrs, President of Wesleyan College 20 yrs. Wesleyan College has nurtured young women who became leaders, teachers, musicians, and missionaries - more than a century and a half.
This site of Lake Academy deeded Aug. 2, 1826 by Thomas & Lurany Lundy for a "School of Higher Education and House of Worship" in what was then Monroe County – later Bibb County. Little doubt Lake Academy used by Methodist Circuit Riders in 1823. A Sunday School was organized on this site in 1847.
