The several African American families that migrated to San Augustine, Texas in the mid-1800s and settled in St. John Community were intertwined with each other. They worked their farms, performed other jobs, helped each other in times of need, and produced numerous offsrping that served as husbands and wives for their neighboring families. St. John Community is home to the African American ancestors of the following surnames: Sowell; Weeks; Hunt; Davis; Cartwright; Garrett. The ancestors built homes, a church, St. John Baptist Church, purchased property and dedicated a cemetery that sits on private lands. The cemetery was originally designated by Marshall Week's daughter, Sally Mae Weeks, when an immigrant Mexican man passed away on Marshall Week's property. Sally ordered the man be placed near a tree. The burial place was known as the "Weeks Graveyard". The elders that settled in the community were: Hall Hawkins and wife; Jack and Henrietta (Marshall) Hunt; Marshall and Clara (Dodd) Weeks; Hyram and Rachel Sowell; Mannie and Henrietta (Hunt) Garrett; Lee and Becky (Dodd) Cartwright; and Abe Davis and wife.
