The Baroque Parochialkirche was built in the years 1695-1705 and is the oldest protestant church in Berlin, built just shortly after the reformation took foot in Prussia. It's now part of the Mariengemeinde (Mary's Congregation). Its old churchyard was consecrated in 1705 and is one of the oldest among Berlins nearly 200 cemeteries. By the middle of the 19th century it was completely filled, and with the exception of some funerals here and there, the parishioners used other graveyards. The last recorded funeral was that of a solder in 1945. The building and the graveyard were severely damaged during the war, and the congregation was just somewhat able to rebuild. During the years of the communist reign in East Germany (1945-1989) the church was eventually closed, and the cemetery as well as the crypt underneath the 250-year-old building were neglected and fell into disrepair. Eventually the building was no longer used as a church but as a furniture storage space. After the fall of the wall and during the last decade of the 20th century the congregation once again took ownership of the building and it has been restored to its old glory, except for the missing church steeple. The cemetery surrounding the church has been restored and the graves were given replicas of the original crosses and grave markers. There is a crypt underneath the church with vaults and some 20 catacombs, were wealthy parishioners had laid their families to rest for over 200 years.
