Add PhotosNote..Norfolk Highlands was the only choice given by findagrave for description..it should be Lower Norfolk Co., Va. or just Norfolk Co., Va.
When Thomas Hollowell acquired the property it was in "Lower Norfolk County" and this area later became Norfolk County and then the City of Chesapeake. The mouth of Sedge Creek where it joins Broad Creek may be two miles most from the Western Branch Elizabeth River and of course the mouth of Broad Creek (now Bailey Creek) is on the River. The Western boundary of his property would be approximately a mile or so from the now Suffolk city line.(upper Norfolk Co.)
This would put the Hollowell farm in Lower Norfolk County when acquired, then it became Norfolk County and now the City of Chesapeake. It would be best to use the City of Chesapeake as the reference as few today know where Norfolk County was and even fewer have ever heard of Lower Norfolk County. Much of his farm is in what is now the Western Branch Park just southwest of the Chesapeake Squire Mall.
(Land description by Jimmie Whedbee)
The early Society of Friends did not favor individual grave markers as its members preferred simplicity and humility in death as in life. They wished instead, to be remembered for the manner in which they witnessed the Inner Light, particularly in their opposition to slavery. At the same time, Friends kept meticulous records of life events, including exact dates for the death of all members. It was only their places of burial that were not mentioned. Later years this trend changed.
This lack of information and the fact that early Friends were buried in unmarked graves or under simple field stones, makes it impossible for us to know in modern times where they were buried.
NOTE: There will not be any photos of this private cemetery. Most likely no stones or markers either.. There is not a mention in the Quaker records of burial site only the correct death dates.
