This quiet knoll located near Turkey Creek on the rolling prairie of Fairfield Township was selected by the early settlers as the final resting place for their beloved. They chose well because the black earth i deep with an occasional native red sandstone rock.
The cemetery was named after the adjoining land owners--the Powers Family. It sometimes has been called Pitts Cemetery because of the Pitts Family ownership of acreage in the area. It also has been affectionately called Hawkins Cemetery because of the number of Hawkins infants interred.
Time passed by this early pioneer's cemetery and neglect settled in. A lack of maintenance, invasion by neighboring hogs, black locust trees, buck brush, poison ivy and scrub oak soon hid the cemetery from view. And the community forgot it was there.
Early contributors to the Find A Grave Powers Cemetery memorials are Donna Jean Sutiff and Loretta (Willis) Rainey-Fones. They have written the following about this cemetery: "Many of the stones are broken and lost and this whole cemetery is overgrown with brush and weeds." and "With hard work and tender care, this cemetery has been in the process of restoration by the Shirley family the past few years."
We are seeking descendants and cousins.
