The cemetery was inventoried in 1993 and on file with the library. There were once 71 graves and 55 unknown markers. However, when I visited the cemetery in June 2009, I took pictures of all but 2 of the headstones still readable and there were only 19 total left. They were in very thick grass and some poison ivy so I couldn't get to the last two (they were Marriott's). Most others appears to have fallen over, they were deteriorated, broken or sunken into the ground. There were also a ton of ticks and we battled them for 3 days after this visit and ended up bug bombing the car. Aside from that, it was very moving experience and one I'll never forget (and my 15 yr old son I took with me)! A true treasure to discover. I've since been in contact with the land owner and may post more later.
I will attempt to provide directions:
Go south on Hwy 5 out of Versailles, MO, about 6 miles. Turn West/right on Hwy J. Take a right at the first gravel road, McCasland. Just after Ritchie Road, pull forward a few more feet on McCasland. The hill will be on your right. It isn't marked at the road or at the top of the hill. When I was there, there were bulldozer or tractor tracks in the road that appeared someone was recently stuck trying to drive up it. The Assessor's office said the cemetery is 1100 feet up the hill, according to GIS records. Contact me for a copy of the plat map if you are interested. The burial map and inventory is on file at the library but the directions on file are no longer valid as it references numbered roads that are not used any longer (they have been named/the numbers are no longer posted).
