It is very well maintained, in spring it is filled with a carpet of glorious nodding heads of early snowdrops and the vivid purples and yellows of crocus flowers.
Next door to the Churchyard is the old building of the tiny Whicham Grammar School which was founded in 1540 and is reputed to be one of the oldest in the Country.
The car park is very small and shared with fell walkers cars.
The parish of Whicham is situated between the towns of Millom and Bootle, and also neighbours the towns/villages of Haverigg, Kirksanton and Whitbeck. The village consists of a few houses, farms, bungalows and a church. It is a very rural area with mountain sheep grazing the fertile grass in the valley and the coarser bracken and gorse on the slopes of the very beautiful Black Coombe. Standing at the bottom of Whicham hill where it joins the A595 Millom to Whitehaven road, was a smithy where all the local farmers used to ride their horses to be shod.
Black Combe, a mountain measuring 600 metres near Silecroft, takes two hours to climb, with views on clear days stretching from Sellafield to Morecambe.
