After many years of searching they were able to locate the Mason Grove Cemetery. They worked very hard and cleared he overgrown vegetation that had overtaken the cemetery. They located the graves, all but one marked with sandstone rocks, and fenced in the small cemetery. Just weeks prior to this ceremony that purchased and had installed a memorial stone for Obediah and Nancy Mason Johnson.
The cemetery is located very near the farm that once belonged to Obediah. It is possible this cemetery was once part of the land that housed a small church, if so the records for this church are no longer available. It is further speculated the land on which the cemetery resides once belonged to the family of Nancy Mason. It is known that Nancy's father was Mark Mason Jr. The last record that I have found for Mark Jr was the 1830 Census for Montgomery County, North Carolina. Mark's widow Easter (or Esther) is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Census records in District 17, Madison County, Tennessee.
The extended family of Obediah and Nancy owe an immense debt of gratitude for the many many hours of hard work and dedication that Nathan, Howard and Glenn have expended in finding this final resting place for our beloved ancestors. As Glenn stated in his narrative at the dedication. "For the Johnson family, this land is ground zero."
