This cemetery is located on the grounds of the former Armstrong County Home, and is the burial ground for Armstrong County indigents. The property was donated to Armstrong County by the Mergenthaler family, and there are a few of that family buried there as well as members of the Taylor family, who were related to the Mergenthaler family through marriage. These are the only graves with headstones, with two exceptions and are located at the front of the cemetery. The two exceptions are the graves of William Lawrence James 1874-1961, and Margaret Toth 1932-2003.
Most of the graves are unmarked, with the deceased being cremated. There are a few graves at the far end of the cemetery that are marked with temporary markers or with aluminum stakes. I have been informed by the Armstrong County Coroner that there are approximately 325 persons buried here. The county records that I have received provide only the name of the deceased and a date, which could indicate the actual date of death or the date of interment. Additionally, several entries such as "Unknown woman found in river" or "Unknown man and stillborn child" are listed.
Directions: From the intersection of Pa. routes 66/28 and Pa. route 85, go east towards Rural Valley. Proceed for approximately .38 miles and make a sharp right turn at the entrance of the Armsdale Administration Building. The road leading to the cemetery is to the right of the Armsdale Administration building and goes between the Recycling Building and the Maintenance Building. There is a cable blocking the road to the cemetery about 200 feet from the Maintenance Building. If you ask at the Maintenance Building someone will usually open the road to allow access. The cemetery is at the end of this road, at the top of the hill. The cemetery is fenced, but has 3 gates, which are not locked.
