Add PhotosIt was established on June 11, 1858 when Revd. J.M. Odin, bishop of the Galveston Diocese, purchased the land for $25.00 from Haden Harrison Edwards, son of Empresario Haden Edward. The cemetery is on the west side of the Oak Grove Cemetery facing Lanana Street and is "one acre more or less" and measures 147' n-s x 287'e-w. In 1912, the county officials decided to build a courthouse on the site of the which was located on the southwest corner of Main and North streets. Many of the graves from had already been moved from that site and reinterred in the Old Catholic Cemetery on LaNana Street. A State Historical Survey Commission marker, affixed to the outside courthouse wall, is the only remaining memorial to the original settlers who were interred in that location. According to the marker, Antonio Gil Y'Barbo was buried there; if so, he could have been moved to the Old Catholic Cemetery when the graves were moved in 1912. No records of names of the people who were moved have been located. Supposedly, the oldest grave moved was for Father Mendoza, who died at Mission Guadalupe in 1718.
