Add PhotosSarah Wakeman Morehouse died in February of 1865, and Thaddeus in March of 1866. They are buried in what is believed to be the old Baptist Cemetery, which was only recently discovered through the efforts of Bert Michels and Vera Shaw. This small cemetery is located very close to the line of the "Trace Road" and was quite probably a part of the farm land the Morehouse family once owned. Thaddeus and Sarah Morehouse operated a tavern on the old Trace Road from the 1820's through the 1850's. The property is now owned by Trinity Lutheran Church.
On November 28, 1982, Louise Morehouse of Carbondale, Illinois, came to Richland County for the dedication of the reconstructed Morehouse gravesite. Mrs. Morehouse's husband was the great-great grandson of Thaddeus and Sarah Wakeman Morehouse. Several years ago the broken tombstones of the Morehouse family were found by Vera Shaw. Berlin Campbell designed and built the fence around the gravesite. The pieces that were found of the original tombstones were embedded in the base of the new stone that Mrs. Morehouse purchased.
