A Swedish Lutheran Church congregation was formed in Rail Prairie Township prior to 1900 but a dissident group broke away to form another church. The name adopted was the Gilgal Presbyterian Church in 1903. On May 12, 1903, 2.25 acres of property was deeded to the Trustees of the Gilgal Presbyterian Church. On December 22, 1904, a plat was recorded titled the "Rail Prairie Union Cemetery". Subsequently on July 30, 1905, a strip of land along the north side of the plat was marked as Church Yard. The property was 0.68 acres in size.
The church was active until June 14,1934. On May 20, 1937, the Presbytery of St. Cloud, Minnesota transferred the Church Yard to the Rail Prairie Aid Society. On October 17, 1985, the Rail Prairie Aid Society transferred the Church Yard to Rail Prairie Township. On April 15, 1986, the Presbytery of St. Cloud, Minnesota transferred the cemetery to Rail Prairie Township.
Rail Prairie Township, named after Case Rail, was merged with Scandia Valley Township on December 31, 2002.
The cemetery became informally known as "Gilgal Cemetery" because of the chuch presence but the formal plat name was never changed. At one time, a sign was erected as Gilgal Cemetery which has been removed and replaced by the current sign.
The cemetery is located at NE1/4NE1/4 Section 18 Township 132 North Range 30 West rural Pillager, Minnesota.
