The Union cemetery was located along was then known as Chestnut Street (now Napoleon Street) in the 1800's and was one of the town's first cemeteries. Prone to damage from floods, many of the headstones were washed away making it difficult to identify all of the persons buried there. A large monument was erected there in 1898 in memory of those unknown persons buried there. Eventually the site became more of a park as evident by various postcards of the period.
In 1949 the monument was moved to Grandview Cemetery in preparation for the building of the Cambria County War Memorial Arena that was built on the site. Also, as many remains as possible were re-interred at Grandview. Although it is most likely that anyone listed in this cemetery now was probably moved, they may have been among some of the unknown. If a person was known to have been buried here but has no official record of being re-interred elsewhere, they could be listed here just so that there is a record of them.
When the War Memorial was undergoing expansion in the late 1980's it was rumored that bone fragments were found during the excavation.
Please note: This site is gone and no headstones exist. If the person buried here was not officially recorded as being re-interred elsewhere, then it will be impossible to find their headstone.
