A historic site, closed to burials. Located in the far northwest portion of Cook County, in Palatine Township of section 34* of the northeast quarter. Re-named Wolfrum Cemetery in the 1990s, after a Palatine historian Avery Wolfrum, who was a township cemetery trustee.
The oldest known cemetery in Palatine Township, Cook County Illinois. It was believed to be an old Indian burial ground* at one time. This small pioneer cemetery lies within a grove of oak trees, overlooking Salt Creek. Old timers knew it as "Old Plum Grove Road Cemetery". Wooden crosses were used at early burials, that are gone now, and would account for more burials.
In 1856 an early homesteader Orrin Ford, deeded some of his farmland for the cemetery to Cook County. Nicknamed the "Lost Cemetery" for many years it was forgotten, due to its hidden location.
Arnett C Lines an early Barrington historian recorded this cemetery probably in the 1930s. At that time many headstones were damaged. He noted headstone fragments were used as stepping stones across the creek.
Today remaining fragments of stones are lying flat on a supportive cement slabs. This historic cemetery is now well kept by Palatine Township's since their ownership.
Transcriptions and photos were done in 2008 by volunteers from the Barrington Area Library. In addition, images were taken of 21 "unknown" fragments of headstones and footstones.
NOTE: Cemetery difficult to find.
Surrounded by Rolling Meadows, northwest of Old Plum Grove Road on eastside of Salt Creek. Entrance on small road running west, off Greenwood Ct, adjacent to a group of town homes.
