Masonic Cemetery
Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA
On July 11, 1902 an article appeared in the Huntington Herald stating "Removed Many Bodies: Masonic Graveyard Has Come to Be a Resort for Rowdies." At the time it stated several remains had been exhumed (haphardly and relocated to Mt. Hope Cemetery). Still a couple hundred bodies remained - apparently transients were sleeping on the site, lighting large fires, and vandalizing many of the remaining grave monuments.
In another article from the Evening Herald on April 11, 1905 it was stated some of the remaining grave markers on the site were being taken and "used as pavement." Also, it reported the Masonic Cemetery had been condemned yet many monuments remained even though it was claimed bodies were being removed without their monuments by laborers contracted by Huntington city as relatives of the deceased no longer resided there or accidently due to an "oversight."
At some point the land was resold and appears to be a housing subdivision at present. It is stated the heart of the cemetery was in/around the street Dayton Court. No doubt countless unmarked pioneer graves were never moved and still remain in the area disturbed or undisturbed.
