Add PhotosThe cemetery is located just south of the Harrison Co. line near the Harkrider and Woodley cemeteries. There isn't a road access to the cemetery and you must walk 200-300 yards through heavy brush and undergrowth to get to it.
Directions:
1. Go to Woodley cemetery on the corner of CR 311(Panola Rd.) and Woodley Rd.
2. Proceed west on Cr 311 for 0.6 miles
3. Turn south on CR 3101
4. Follow CR 3101 (an old oil field road) for 0.3 miles
5. Look to the west, your right, and the cemetery is on the top of a hill (hickory covered) about 200-300 yards into the woods. The hilltop is visible from the road.
The Johnson, Birdsong, Willingham and Black graves are the most prominently marked. There are two individual graves that were marked with brick markers several feet high. There are no names or dates on these graves. A brick enclosed plot is also visible that could have been the foundation of a cemetery house made of wood, that was used in the period of the early 1800s. There are several graves that do not have markers. Capt. Thomas Jeptha Gibson is buried there along with his wife, Margaret Bryan Gibson, and their 7 year old daughter, Julia. It is said that there are 4 more children from the Gibson Family buried next to them, alto we do not know their names. They brought their white nanny, Betsey Jones, with them from Forsythe, Georgia, in Dec. 1870 and it has been said she is buried here also.
It is also said that after the early white folks were buried here, the land around the small cemetery was then used as a cemetery for the local black folk. It has been estimated that there could be upward of 100 buried in unmarked graves.
