HOMER CEMETERY
Greenville, PA
Homer Cemetery, consisting of 1.46 acres, is located on Morgan Street in Greenville. It was bulldozed over and spread with ashes in the 1940's by a private concern. The Homer descendents, led by Fred Homer, have spent years attempting to regain the family plot and restore it to a condition deserving a final resting place.
The following was copied from a newspaper article in 1979. "The future of the Morgan Street cemetery, which years ago apparently served as primarily a family plot for the Homer family, may have been settled as a result of an agreement between descendents of the Homer family and landowner who purchased the plot several years ago. The property has remained in limbo while the family and the new landowner debated what was to be done with the land. Legally nothing can be built on land formerly used as a cemetery unless any remains are removed and buried in a cemetery situated elsewhere. Borough Solicitor Warren R. Keck III told council in a yearend meeting Friday night that the borough is going into court to obtain authorization for an agreement between the borough and two parties that calls for the borough to grade, level and remove debris on the site, at no cost to the borough. The families involved will stand the cost, Keck said. The bodies will not be removed from the site. In addition, plans call for erection of a memorial that would contain the names of and information about those buried on the site."
