The land where the cemetery is was once owned by great great grandmother, Lizzie and Dewey Lawrence, my great grand uncle who also lived on the land and now buried in the family cemetery. The house is no long there just an old well, under ground cellar and a concrete porch where the house use to be.
For any family members that wish to visit and walk on the land once owned by their ancestors be aware that the small cemetery is alive with snakes, large spiders, ticks and other critters. Besure to bring tall boots, a weedeater and bug spray. The land is now owned by the Maxey family so you will need their permission to go on the land.
Directions to Lawrence/Banks Family Cemetery:
In Atoka Oklahoma, go west on State Hwy 7, 13 miles to Wilson Lane. Turn south on Wilson Lane and go south for one mile. The cemetery is on the southwest corner of the intersection of Wilson Lane and Artesian Road. About 1/4 mile or less west of the Wilson Volunteer Fire Station on the southeast side of the road going west. The cemetery is 3 1/2 hour drive from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
We traveled to the cemetery early fall of 2011 and found 5 headstones, 2 old funeral home marker and 3 unidentified graves.
