From the Sandy Valley Call of August 30, 1916: "The settlement which became Catlettsburg goes back as far as 1808 [in fact earlier], in which history tells us that Sawney Catlett, an Irishman of rough exterior, journeyed to the banks of the Big Sandy and erected a rough log cabin on the site that is now the business district of Catlettsburg."
The original Catlett log home was built in 1811 and, although extensively changed over time, is still standing on a wooded hillside in Catlettsburg. It was purchased by Colonel Laban T. Moore about 1870. Moore constructed a large addition to the Catlett home, covered it in wood siding and retained the Catlett portion as the servants quarters for the larger Moore home. The property is registered on the National Registry of Historic Places and is the oldest known surviving structure in the area. Alexander was buried on his property, as were his son Horatio and two of Horatio's daughters.
