At the turn of the 20th century the Hartland Church of God grew out of a community of mostly extended family of African Americans. Many previously worshipped at Sloan Chapel, a former church in the Johns River circuit. In those days the congregation started out meeting "under the arbor" to serve black congregants in the community from neighboring Kincaid, Harshaw, Sudderth, Bristol and Corpening lands.
This historically African American congregation founded in the holiness tradition, and later included under the Church of God (Anderson Indiana), was just one of the church bodies to form out of Sloan's. When Founded, the Hartland church of God stood near its current location "down the road"from where the corpening school (later known as "the school house") would serve the community and "up the road" from a now almost forgotten school house that had served the community elders long ago.
Many of the early graves for enslaved and free ancestors listed at the Hartland Church of God are laid to rest in the old Sloan cemetery still located off Highway 18 in the woods between Bighorn rd and Hartland Rd.
As membership grew and incorporated worshipers from nearby Hartland A.M.E, a new building was constructed alongside the old. From deed to present the congregation has maintained membership among those faithful descendants and cousins.
The cemetery for the church lies in front of the church, immediately across Piney Road from the Hartland Community Cemetery. The internments read almost as a family tree. The church only began using the cemetery around, 1938. Some listed here after that date may be in the community cemetery directly across the street. Older internments are likely in the cemetery at the former church site.
