CORINNA — For years, the centuries-old Burton family burial lot on the Ridge Road in Corinna lay neglected. Raspberry brambles knitted tightly over the ground. Decay caused headstones to crumble. The cemetery fell into disrepair.
But thanks to the recent efforts of a group of local volunteers, the cemetery has been refurbished. The brush and brambles have been cleared and a new fence erected around the perimeter of the lot. A sign has been made and hung on the gate at the plot's entrance. The plot will be covered with loam and seeded in the coming weeks.
Heading up the project has been Lloyd and Audrey Bolstridge and Leslie Bolstridge, all of Corinna, assisted by Irl McKusick, who owns the land where the plot is located, and members of local Scout troops and Dexter Grange.
While cleaning the area this week, volunteers located two gravestones of the Burton family covered up by dirt and leaves. In addition, according to Leslie Bolstridge, the crew found seven large flat rocks, evenly spaced, which are believed to have been used to mark the grave sites of seven Native Americans buried during the last century.
