The land, situated in the present day HORIZONS PARK, in Forsyth County (which broke off from Stokes County in 1849), is in a beautifully wooded area, and includes a large "bowl" of cleared land, where just above a Spring on Hill Creek, Edward Merritt, his wife and others are buried. Horizons Park has a nature trail that one may take, which is quite thrilling when we remember that our ancestor EDWARD MERRITT once owned the land.
For years, descendants of EDWARD MERRITT knew where the graves were located, however, the only marker was a small wooden cross, which was placed over the grave site by Richard Merritt, (deceased) from Illinois.
LOUISE MERRITT and RICHARD MERRITT, both descendants of EDWARD MERRITT, while visiting the site, discovered the plowed area which held the graves, and with much concern, Louise Merritt appeared before the Forsyth County Commission in protest. After a lot of hard work and research she was able to prove that human remains were buried here and the area was preserved and a marker erected in remembrance of the people buried here.

The four corners of the graveyard are marked with stones with the letter M.
