James Taylor II was granted 13,000 acres of land in what became Orange County. He built his home about 1722 and called it Bloomsbury. Following his death in 1729, Bloomsbury's vast holdings were divided among his
children. George received Midland (now Yattan), James III received Bloomsbury, Erasmus received Greenfield and Zachary received Meadow Farm. After James Taylor III died, Bloomsbury passed out of the Taylor family when it was bought by William Quarles and they buried several of their family in the cemetery used by the Taylors. In 1842, the land was purchased by Francis Jerdone and it consisted of 1400 acres at that time. The Jerdone family founded a new cemetery on the property to the left of the plantation house, rather than using the small Taylor-Quarles Cemetery to the right of the house. The Jerdone family and descendants owned the property until it was purchased in 1965 by Jaquelin E. Taylor as a wedding gift for his wife. Jaquelin E. Taylor was a direct descendant of the original builder, James Taylor II. Today, the
property consists of about 300 acres on which there is the house and the two cemeteries.

Directions:
From Orange, Virginia, drive east on Route 20 to just before the small airport, where you will turn left (north) on Bloomsbury Road; it is paved until you go past the airport's boundary on the right. Drive a short distance on the now dirt road until you get to the gate. Then you will need to park and walk about a 1000 feet to get to the house and the two cemeteries. There is a pedestrian unlocked gate to the left of the locked road gate, but permission should be secured before walking onto the property.
