By 1847, however, the Trippett Street Burial Ground was also reaching its maximum: "A new ground was obtained for this Parish in 1774, it contains about 2772 square yards; this is now very much crowded, so much so, that it is necessary to prick with an iron rod for a new grave" (excerpt from "Cemetery Burial; or Sepulture, Ancient And Modern" 1847, 2nd edition, by George Milner, p ix). As a consequence, the original Churchyard and the Trippett Street location were both formally closed to further burials in 1855. Other cemeteries in the City would have been used to bury the St Mary the Virgin parishioners after that time.
The original St Mary the Virgin parish registers (1564-1974) have been deposited with the East Riding Archives (The Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley HU17 9BQ). A record of the interior and Churchyard monument inscriptions and those in the Trippett Street Burial Ground is available from the East Yorkshire Family History Society (Carnegie Heritage Centre, 342 Anlaby Road, Kingston upon Hull, HU3 6JA). The monument inscription record was made from older sources and very few memorial stones from the St Mary the Virgin burial grounds actually survive.
