The following information was taken from www.chicora.org:
"In July 1988 the Department of Corrections Board approved the creation of a new inmate burial ground in a pine tree grove, at the rear of Government property in NW Columbia. At one point during the use of this cemetery, from 1988 to 1995, burials were conducted by a local funeral home at a cost of $960 per burial. Remains were being embalmed, placed in metal caskets, and brought to the cemetery in a hearse. Inmates dug the graves, using modern machinery, and simple grave markers were supplied. This cemetery was used through May 1995 and contains 62 burials. At that time the Department of Corrections, perhaps concerned with cost, began cremating inmates and scattering the ashes at an unknown location, if no family was available to claim the body. There is no memorial to those who have been cremated."
