The school opened in 1891 west of Regina in what is now a growing industrial area. Like residential schools, industrial schools were used to strip aboriginal children of their culture, while enforcing Western ideals.
After the school closed in 1910, it served as the city jail, then the province's home for delinquent boys. In 1948, the school burned to the ground. Now, a portion of the property is home to the Paul Dojak Youth Centre.
Students of the RIIS predominantly came from the Regina area, though some came from northern Saskatchewan - like Thunder, who was originally from Sandy Bay - and parts of Manitoba. When students died at the school, they are believed to have been sent home for burial if their families lived near Regina, but those students whose families lived far away were likely buried on school grounds in the RIIS cemetery.
These days, the unmarked cemetery sits along Pinkie Road, its boundaries shown only by a white, wooden fence.
