In 2012 was the very first time I learn of Mallinckrodt Convent and it's cemetery when I started doing research on my oldest sons fiancee's family tree. I learned that Sister Feliciana Goeckel was buried on the convents burial grounds in 1897, I continued to do research and learned that the convent was established by a nun from Germany named Sister Pauline von Mallinckrodt. On 5-28-13 I decided to try and locate this cemetery, I did find it, however there wasn't a visible sign anywhere, I noticed two upright moments and investigated and found the burials of several nuns and one priest on East South Street near the back parking lot of Little Flower Manor. The location of the burials is marked by a large marble cross, with the inscription identifying this burial location of that of the Sisters order of Sisters of Christian Charity, in front of this monument is an upright monument for Rev. Henry Desselkamp and in front of his monument are several flat tombstones of those Sisters of Christian Charity buried here, the earliest year of death was in 1880 and the latest was 1961. I photographed half of the sisters burials, and plan on returning to finish photographing the remainder of them.
Some history of Mallinckrodt Convent Published on October 17, 2004 in the Times Leader Section B pages 1B,& 6B.
The School and accompanying convent stood at South Meade and East south streets until March 21, 1972, when demolition began on the mammoth structures to make way for the Little Flower Manor nursing home that occupies the spot today.
Established by Mother Pauline von Mallinckrodt of the Sisters of Christina Charity, the school was an all-female Establishment until 1932, when boys were admitted at the primary level. Wyoming Valley Historian Sally Teller Lottick wrote in her book, "Bridging Change."
The primary goal of education for females then was moral and religious, Teller Lottick wrote, but St. Ann's went beyond that.
St. Ann's Academy and the adjacent Mallinckrodt convent occupied this site at South Meade and East South Street for 94 years before being torn down in 1972 to make way for the Little Flower manor nursing home.
The commencement ceremony for the final graduating class of 24 girls was held on May 21, 1971. Most of the high school students transferred to the then-new Bishop Hoban High School, while elementary students went to various parochial elementary schools n the area.
