Add PhotosOriginally surveyed for 800 acres, this land was granted 25 August, 1659 to Capt. Robert Morris, an English mariner. (Pats. 4:257 MHR). Morris and his wife Martha sold Ratcliffe Manor to James Wasse, a London Physician, 12 August 1674 and on that same day Wasse surrendered the original patent with the right of "Court Barron and all things thereunto belonging" to Charles Calvert, Lord Proprietory of the Province of Maryland, asking for a new title in his name after discovering that a duplicate certificate had been issued for this same land to the brothers Robert and Thomas Hopkins, on the same date as the one given to Capt. Morris. Lord Calvert ordered a new survey to be made and on 20 May, 1676, title to 920 acres of land was granted to James Wasse.
In 1698, Clement Saile, agent for James Wasse, Chirurgeon and Citizen of London, sold Ratcliffe Manor to Thomas Bartlett.
After the death of Thomas Bartlett Sr. in 1711, Ratcliffe Manor was divided between his children. The "dwelling plantation" (the house and surrounding land on the west side of Thirdhaven Creek) was sold out of the family in its entirety by 1752 and subsequently became the ancestral home of the Hollydays after Henry Hollyday had received the land from his father-in-law George Robins, who had purchased it from John Bartlett, son of Thomas.
As of 1984, a small portion, whereon the mansion house built about 795 by Richard Bartlett still stands, is back in Barltett hands.
