Add PhotosThe existing building dates back to 1430 when it was restored and largely rebuilt by William de Bowes, who was Lord Mayor of York in 1417 and 1428, and Member of Parliament in four Parliaments.
The Bowes family lived in what is now the Black Swan Inn, some 110 yards from the church. This passed to the Thompson family, one of whose daughters was the mother of James Wolfe, hero of Quebec. Thus the Church has been called "The Cradle of Canada". This is commemorated by the flags of Canada and the USA which adorn the church.
Burial registers for the St Cuthbert parish cover the period 1581 to 1852. These have been deposited with the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD. Like all other church burial locations within the City of York, the St Cuthbert Churchyard would have been closed to further burials by parliamentary order in December 1854.
