One of six cemeteries located next to the "Hallesches Tor", where the gate in the former city wall used to be leading to the city of Halle. Burials in these cemeteries have been taking place since 1735. Collectively these cemeteries are also known as the "Friedhöfe vor dem Halleschen Tor":
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche I
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche II
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche III
Dreifaltigkeitsfriedhof I
Friedhof der Bethlehems- oder Böhmischen Gemeinde
Friedhof der Herrnhuter BrĂĽdergemeinde
The third cemetery of the two Lutheran congregations "Jerusalem" and "Neue Kirche", opened in 1819, is located at the western part of the area, facing the Mehringdam, BlĂĽcherstrasse and Baruther Strasse.
The other two Jerusalem and Neue Kirche cemeteries are in the district of Neukölln:
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche IV opened in 1852
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche V opened in 1872
Listings taken from the original historic interment records for this cemetery sadly reflect the high infant mortality rate in the 19th century and the large number of people succumbing to infectious diseases before the invention of antibiotics.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
An exception are "Honorary Graves of the City of Berlin": Citizens of historical importance or achievements are honored by an Honorary Grave (Ehrengrab) which will be cared for perpetually by the city.
