Nelson Burial Ground
Strafford, Orange County, Vermont, USA
Taken from Strafford Historical Society Bulletin #13, 1965
"This cemetery was unknown to Mrs. Chandler in 1919. However, from various inquiries coming to the Town Clerk's Office from time to time regarding persons who were supposed to be buried in Strafford and known to have memorials marking their place of burial, it became evident that some important burial ground had been missed in the 1919 report.
Dyer Cilley of Tunbridge dropped a remark about an old cemetery on the west side of Strafford near the Tunbridge Town Line, where he said he had read the names, "Nelson, Ordway, Morse and Hackett"... A deed was found in the Strafford Land Records, Book 16 Page 525 from Polly Nelson to Aaron Nelson which reads in part as follows: "Reserving and not meaning to convey the burying ground on said premises, but directing that said burying ground be kept and used forever for burying purposes" a deed from Daniel Robinson, guardian for Aaron Nelson, to Emily Smith mentions the same reservations, Book 18 Page 476, but the various deeds since then have not mentioned the burying ground. The same farm is now owned by Roscoe Manning. Some time before 1956 this cemetery was bulldozed away by the owner of the farm, and the monuments buried and no effort made for recording the names or vital statistics of the same. However from letters and record found in the Town Clerks office, it is fair to assume that the following is a partial list of the burials made there..."
