The Isle of Wight House of Industry opened in 1774 "to serve as an Hospital for the Reception of such aged, sick, or infirm Persons, and young Children, as are not able to work". It housed the unemployed, the homeless, orphaned children, those born of unmarried parents as well the sick, those with physical and learning disabilities and mental health problems. The able bodied, including children, were put to work in agriculture or crafts such as spinning, weaving and lacemaking. Following the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, the institution became the Isle of Wight Union Workhouse. The site is now occupied by St Mary's Hospital.



The attached burial ground contains 3223 recorded graves of those who died while resident at the Workhouse, as well as many others for whom records have been lost. The grave markers were removed in the mid-20th century, but in 2013 a memorial, designed by the Isle of Wight artist Brian Marriott, was constructed to commemorate the thousands of people interred at the burial ground.
