Alms House Burial Ground
Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA
I sent a request to Richland County Public Library, Walker Local History room, inquiring about Alms House. Margaret provided the following: Thanks for contacting us. I have searched through South Carolina Historic Newspapers and was not able to locate an article that provided the history of the Alms House. Through searching I was able to glean that the Alms House was located in Richland County since at least 1884. By at least 1909 it was located on Covenant Road (known as Alms House Road until the mid 1960s), on the property that is today occupied by Trenholm Park. There were several articles describing the conditions at the Alms House, some favorable, some less so. In general, the Alms House provided shelter, beds, at least one cooked meal a day, a garden, and corn fields surrounding the house (or houses). There were white and black residents, male and female, adult and children. It was inspected in the earlier part of the 20th century by the State Board of Charities and Corrections, and one or two articles indicated that conditions were unhealthy. Sometime after World War II the Alms House was closed and the old building was converted into the Richland County Children's Home. The Richland County Children's Home was closed finally in 1965.
