It also kept alive the reminder to the 23 resistance members who perished on the execution place of Rieme. That site had to disappear in 1998 because of the construction of the Kluizendok.
The executions were carried out in secret and the victims were buried anonymously. Some of the resistance fighters killed in Rieme was recovered in a mass grave in Hechtel-Eksel. In addition, there were also German soldiers and Belgian criminals executed. By these conditions, it is still unclear how many people were killed. After the liberation, the mass grave in oostakker uncovered. The victims were identified and buried in their residences. The crosses in the field thus have a symbolic meaning. Yet it is also a town cemetery: execution in 1952 were buried the remains of 15 in Munich decapitated West-Flemish political prisoners.
On site is a train carriage with which hundreds of Belgians were deported to concentration camps in Germany and Poland
