County Farm Cemetery
Also known as Poor Asylum Cemetery , Poor Farm Cemetery
Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, USA
The Poor Asylum, or County Farm was originally located in Hensley Township. By the act of 1831, the overseers of the poor were required on the first Monday of May, annually, to "farm out" the poor on contracts to the highest bidders. Poor children were apprenticed, males until the age of 21, females, 18. This was done at a public auction, not unlike a slave auction. As the population grew, this system proved to be burdensome, and was stopped.
In 1856, 100 acres was purchased at a cost of $5,600 one mile west of Franklin for the new location. For a cost of $1,500, a new brick building, 36 feet by 72 feet was constructed. This area was located south of where the Johnson County Memorial Hospital now stands, approximately where the Juvenile Center and Jail are. At one time, a Cemetery was located on the grounds.
A 1932 reading of all the cemeteries in Johnson County noted that years before, some graves were located there, but there were no stones for them. Some of the earliest burials for ones that died here were carved into two large Beech trees near the cemetery. Some of those were recorded, and we are adding them here.
The Poor Asylum remained in use until after Social Security started in 1932, and that proved to be the downfall of it. The brick building remained in use for other purposes until the 1970s, then it was demolished, and the Justice Center Complex constructed.
