PAST FACTS & THEORIES CONCERNING THE CENTRE-LINE CEMETERY JUL, 1997
The Catholic cemetery located on the Centre-Line road was unscientifically probed on the 26 June, 1997 under the careful direction of a Cemetery Board member. The intent of the probe was to determine the exact location and number of interments that have been carried out in the past at the Centre- Line Catholic cemetery. The following assorted theories have now been accepted as factual;
_a) The Cemetery Board has NO idea how many interments that have been carried out at the Centre-Line cemetery.
_b) The Cemetery Board has no knowledge as to where the interments had been carried out at the Centre-Line cemetery because most of the cemetery grounds have been graded and levelled years ago.
_c) The Marmora road workcrew pushed alot of the upright monuments over the sides of the cemetery grounds when the Centre-Line road was upgraded· in the early 1940's.
_d) The monumepts that are presently located at the Centre-Line cemetery cannot be verified as actual burials that had occurred years ago.
_e) The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Parish has NO known source of. Burial Reference Books pertaining to the Centre-Line cemetery.
_f) The present (July, 1997) monuments are located at the Centre-Line cemetery;
_6 - Upright monuments in their normal upright position.
_5 - Upright monuments in the prone position.
_1 - Upright monument (Charles Brady) that has been restored & relocated from the Centre-Line cemetery to the main Catholic cemetery located on Bursthall & Mary Streets, Marmora.
_5 Small flat monuments or footstones with just initials
PRESENT FACTS AND THEORIES CONCERNING THE CENTRE-LINE CEMETERY JUL, 1997
Since the Catholic cemetery located on the Centre-Line road was unscientifically probed on the 26 June, 1997, the Cemetery Board now feels confident that the following facts are most likely closer to what really happened;
_a) The Cemetery Board is now almost positive that only between 20 and 21 interments were ever carried out at the Centre-Line cemetery.
_NOTES; The first interment at the Centre-Line cemetery was Alexander McCallum who died on the 28 November, 1858.
The last interment at the Centre-Line cemetery was James Quinn who died on the 2 February, 1876. One of the very first known burials at the new brick Catholic Church' located on Bursthall & Mary Street was Mrs Robert Neill (O'Neill) nee Ellen Wolfe who died on the 25 April, 1876.
_b) Seventeen or eighteen of the total interments at the Centre-Line cemetery are located in a straight line or row approximately 10 feet from the wire fence on the East side of the cemetery grounds.
_c) Only one interment is presently buried exactly where his/ her upright monument is located. John Murray is NOT buried in the front row facing the East fence with the other 17 or 18 interments.
_d) One interment is a baby girl who died at the age of 11 months. It is very conceivable that this baby was buried with one of its relatives at the time. This factor could account for the number differences. Baby was Rosa Ann Cook born 12 September, 1866 and died the 18 August, 1867. Aged 11 months and 6 days. Mother Elizabeth Ann Cook.
_e) The Township road crew straightened and raised the road and widened the road allowance directly infront of the cemetery grounds for several hundred yards in both directions. On doing so, it appears that they also raised the level of the East & North ends of the cemetery grounds by at least 2 or 3 feet as the grass texture is very different in both these areas. I am confident that the local workcrew would not have proceeded with this project had they not had the approval from the pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Father H.J Farrell.
f) The known cemetery facts are as follows;
Only 20 or 21 interments in total were ever carried out at the Centre-Line cemetery. Over 16 of these interments presently have upright monuments still available and visible at the Centre-Line cemetery. Only 5 interments appear not to have an upright monument. They are; Mrs Charles Brady ; Mr & Mrs Louis Taillon ; Ignac Paradis ; Samuel Fougha.
It is possible that Mrs Charles Brady's name was to be inscribed on the back-side of her husbands monument but since he died before her it was never done.
It was been reported that the Taillon upright monument was removed from the cemetery by curiosity seekers. Mrs Louis Taillon died from a huge tumor that was covered by all the papers at the time. On the monument was inscribed;
DIED JUNE 5th, 1868
With A TUMOR WEIGHING 142 LBS
AGED 53 YEARS
When two of his river drivers drowned in the near-by rivers Mr Julian Bissonnette erected monuments for Joseph Richards & Ulderic Desilets at the Centre-Line cemetery. Pieces of these monuments are still visible at the cemetery,
Another river driver who was drowned and buried at the Centre-Line cemetery was Ignac Paradis of St Lambert, Quebec. Mr R. Page of the Page Lumber Company also erected a monument in his memory. Nothing remains of this monument.
