Bishop Selwyn donated 10 shillings towards the first church which was pit-sawn on site. He then appointed Rev. John Tutin as the first clergyman in 1860. Rev. Tutin's wife Sarah, and daughters Sarah and Elizabeth, opened a school for girls in the parsonage. They also had girls from throughout Northland board with them while attending the school.
The local area thrived and outgrew the church and a new one was built in 1886 and dedicated on 1 April 1887. The old church was initially moved close to the road and used as a Sunday School. In the 1930s it moved to Hukatere overlooking the Kaipara Harbour and became St. Michael's on-the-hill.
The oldest burial recorded is lawyer George Ryan Esq. who died 15 January 1863. The inside of the church has memorials to various people including military Roll of Honour plaques.
The cemetery is still in use today (2021) for burials and ash interments. It has large grassed areas that can be used for expansion. There is a prominent macrocarpa tree in the rear portion of the cemetery. Recently, concrete rows have been added for future use between the entrance gate and the church.
The rear external wall of the church features a plot map and burial lists. A helpful function of the lists is that they note whether a memorial was present of not when they were compiled in 2018. The lists were compiled from burial records and surveys.
