Providing a tranquil resting place in Christchurch, the Canterbury Memorial Gardens & Crematorium are situated in approximately ten hectares (20 acres) of beautifully landscaped grounds in Linwood Avenue. A small memorial garden surrounds the main administrative office and chapel. The large and main Memorial Garden is situated further down Linwood Avenue.

The gardens have been set apart for the placing of individual Memorial plaques which contain the ashes of the deceased. These Memorials are placed among several types of garden flowers, shrubs and rose bushes where they are open to the air, sunlight, bird song and scent of flowers. Memorial walls are also situated in lawns overlooking the gardens. The gardens provide areas such as rose gardens, rockeries, shrubberies, children's garden and services sections.

The Canterbury Crematorium has been privately owned since 1936 when it was founded by Thomas Loftus Jones and is run by The Cremation Society of Canterbury Limited. The crematorium and gardens have previously been known as Christchurch Crematorium and Woodlawn Crematorium and Memorial Gardens. The Cremation Society also owns the Harewood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, providing similar facilities in North Christchurch.
