First Brisbane Burial Ground was established in 1825 at what is now Skew Street near the North Quay on the northern approach to the William Jolly Bridge. There was also a small cemetery at Nundah, established by German missionaries in 1838 that continues today. Skew Street Cemetery was used for soldiers and convicts, although some aborigines are known to have been buried there. It was in use until 1844 when it was closed during the period Paddington Cemetery came into operation. Bodies were exhumed from Skew Street and transferred to Brisbane General Cemetery, Toowong in 1881. [Brisbane History Group 1994]
