Add PhotosThe slave names listed here in this cemetery were derived from the book, PULASKI COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEATHS, 1853-1870, transcribed by Victoria Glynn, Mountain Press, P. O. Box 400 , Signal Mountain, Tennessee, 1989, page 19, Line 26, available at The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia.
Henry B. Walker's name is listed here because he was a long time slave of the McGavock family. And although he was emancipated from slavery by President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, and died sometime shortly after 1870, he and his family continued to work as sharecroppers for the McGavock family for another ten years. With that in mind, Henry B. Walker is either buried here, or in the Newbern African American Cemetery in Newbern, Virginia in an unmarked grave.
Other possible souls who could be buried here carry the last name: Austin, Clarke, Doleman, Eaves, Mills, Minter, Walker and Young. We honor their lives, their work, and their memory.
